Speith Looks To Defend Title

Jordan Spieth
is the reigning U.S. Junior Nat'l Champ. Yesterday he began his title defense by owning Chelso Barret 7 and 5. After doing exceedingly well at the HP Bryon Nelson Championship and barely missing the St. Jude cut, it must be tough gearing up for this. He a tough kid though so don't bet on a letdown.

Heat Gets To Wie

MIchelle Wie
melted in the heat yesterday at the Evian Masters, suffering heat exhaustion.

"She didn't feel faint," press officer Olivia Payerne told The Associated Press. "This is nothing serious. She went to see a doctor and everything is fine."

Appears so as she was 3-under thru 17 today and T10. This year, Wie has 3 top-10's and is 20th in earnings thru 11 events.

Golf Presents the World's Two Richest Athletes

SI.com released their Fortunate 50 list yesterday. U.S. athletes were ranked by the total income of salary, endorsements, winnings and appearance fees.

Tiger Woods holds the #1 slot with $90,508,000. That's down around $9 million from last year. But the $10mil he received from winning the FedEX Cup didn't hurt. He's held the #1 ranking for 7 straight years. You can bet Elin's lawyers will get a chunk of that booty.

#2 Phil Mickelson is nearly $30 million behind Woods. Couldn't believe the note that 15,000 customers received the promotional rebate from Golfsmith and Callaway offered on Big Bertha Clubs via his win at Augusta.

In the U.S., the list includes 16 NBA players, 15 from the NFL, 13 MLB players, three NASCAR drivers and one boxer.

Worldwide, Roger Federer leads the field with over $61 million (essentially tying Lefty).

Going Low. Very Low.

It was reported at the Nationwide Tour pro-am yesterday that supposedly a Tour player shot a 56 and an AJGA pup posted a 61 at the OSU Scarlet Course. I believe the track is over 5,000 yards. Curious that no names were included, but lets not get caught up in the details...

Oh Boy, A Farmer's Dream Come True

Open winner Louis Oosthuizen cash prize is already blowing a hole in his fatter wallet. Typically, some major winners would splurge on an exotic car, big boat or maybe a cool watch. But the son-of-a-farmer Louis opted instead for a John Deere tractor (courtesy of waggleroom.com).

"Being a farm boy, it was one of my big dreams and I got a nice John Deere tractor," said Oosthuizen before the Scandinavian Masters this week . "I made sure that there is space for my little daughter in her car seat next to me, so, yeah, we are going to have a lot of fun in it."

The Round of 56 Further Explained

I was only half kidding when wondering yesterday if the 56 shot at the Nationwide pro-am was played on a 5,000 track. Come to find out I wasn't far off.

Trevor Murphy played Tuesday at the adjacent Gray Course and posted a 14-under par score that included 12 birdies and an eagle. The Gray Course plays to a par 70 at 5,800 yards with 5 of the 10 par-4s measuring less than 326 yards. The longest par 4 is only 400 yards and one of the three par 5s plays to only 460 yards.

Still, a 56 ain't chopped liver no matter the course.
