King Louis is Crowned

Don't blame Louis Oosthuizen for a boring British Open. Fault the names chasing him. He started as a 200-1 longshot. Even on Saturday's Teebox with a 5 shot lead I proudly predicted he'd perform a Dustin Johnson free fall. Well, what do I know? Would've of been a hell of an Open as the field was tightly bunched behind Oostie (okay, well behind him).

He bombed drives some 30-40 yards past pretty long-hitting Paul Casey on Sunday. Hit casual knockdown shots like he was on the range. Made nearly every putt inside 6 feet. Meanwhile, Casey blew a 5-footer on the first for birdie. Tripled the 12th. Game over. Louis moved up from 54th in the World to 15th. Not sure if he'll build on it or be a one-hit wonder, but for the week he clearly owned everyone.

Oh, and he delighted the press by sending champagne to the media room. Instant beloved figure.

Lee Westwood was the bridesmaid once again. Phil Mickelson used every ball spotter on the course to find his sprayed drives. And then there was Tiger Woods. Big news for Nike that he finally put the Method One putter in play. Unfortunately for Nike, he never took less than 33 putts (5-three putts) before replacing it again with the Scotty Cameron on Sunday.

Lots of links to read for you...

ESPN mirrored my cheering for Louis. I've said it before, that my worst sports viewing is witnessing an athlete implode.

SI's Joe Posnanksi (a great writer) says Tiger's putting woes is a sad signal that he's facing the same issue all greats face--age.

His putting, for the first time in his career, is shaky

Numbers Not Surprising

The British Open final round TV ratings were the lowest ever for the major. 2.6 in the major markets. No intrigue and no names contending will do that to a broadcast.

Tiger Stays Classy--At Least on Friday

Even though Tom Watson has made Tiger Woods his personal whipping post lately, Woods realized that Friday would be Tom's last walk down St. Andrews 18th and the Swilken Bridge. So, on while on the 18th green and sunlight fast disappearing, Woods waved up Watson's group to hit their drives. Otherwise, 'Ol Tom would've had to return at 6:30 Saturday morning (and off TV coverage). Watson kissed the bridge, gave a nice photo op and then broadcasted in some hideous outfits (yes worse than the one above) during the weekend.
