40 Is The New 30 As Graybeards Westwood And Kuchar Win Sunday

Matt Kuchar and Lee Westwood showed that 40 was the new 30–at least yesterday on the pro tours as they won their respective events at the Mayakoba and Nedbank events. Those wins broke winless streaks of four years each for the dynamic duos. As you can see, Westy definitely celebrated hard.

How about this for coincidence?

Kuchar did so with a new caddie “El Tucan” he picked up in Mexico after his regular caddie John Wood had a prior engagement and two other options fell thru.  I’m sure Tucan was thrilled with the customary 10% winners share.

“[El Tucan is] definitely my lucky charm,” Kuchar said on Sunday night. “It was great having him with me. I feel like he brought me good luck, some extra crowd support, and did a great job as well. So he was great on the bag. Did just what I kind of was looking for and hoping for.”

The last time he held the 54-hole lead, at the 2016 Memorial, he shot 73 and tied for 4th. This week he closed it out. The 40-year-old has now won eight times on the PGA Tour.

“To have my kids there, I nearly teared up when I sank that final three-footer and then saw the family come running out. It’s a special thing for me. My kids are kind of an age where they understand what I do. They hadn’t seen me win a tournament in a long time, and to be able to do that in front of them is great. To have the support they’ve given me, my wife in particular,” he said.

The 45-year old Westwood’s win was the more surprising of the two. Especially after shooting a salty 64 in the final round.

“You are never sure whether you are going to be able to do it again,” Westwood said. Then he grinned, realizing he’d made the interviewer tear up, too. “I’ve made you cry now,” Westwood told him.

Aren’t sports cries the best?!

Anyway, cheers to the graybeards.
